Prompt: Riding the bus
Summary: Jared loses his car privileges and is forced to take the public school bus to school. He ends up with more than just a ride to school every morning.

Monday

Jared Padalecki doesn’t ride the dirty yellow school bus, he has never taken the bus, he has had a perfectly good car since he turned 16 last summer and he certainly doesn’t wait inside of crowded bus shelters in the pouring rain, but today in the rain with no umbrella he’s waiting for the bus.

Humility is not something he does well but having his car taken away for a week because of curfew issues has forced him to take the bus with the other kids from his neighborhood, kids he doesn’t know or want to know because Jared, is the cream of his junior class.

Standing hunched over next to a kid with a cigarette hanging from his lip Jared shows his distain for his situation as he tries in vain to move away from the smoke filling his lungs and he backs into a few kids behind him and they grumble giving him dirty looks before resuming their conversation. He has never felt so out of place in his life, he’s always the one standing out but today he is just part of the crowd, not something he has ever wanted to be.

The sound of an engine roaring through the rain soaked streets edges closer and everyone adjusts their school gear as they turn their gaze in the direction of the sound making ready to bolt as soon as the doors are opened.

A large Yellow bus pulls up it’s brakes squealing as it comes to a halt in front of the school bus crossing sign flipping it’s red stop sign out into the road as the doors swing open the squeaking noise ending with a hushed rubber thudding sound. Inside sits a large man wearing a yellow vest, obnoxiously chewing his piece of gum and wearing a pair of sunglasses, even though it’s not even sunny. “All aboard!” He shouts out as the mass of students cluster out into the rain and single file onto the bus. Jared is last in line, he can see there are already students on the bus and he begins to worry about finding a suitable seat.

Jared steps onto the bus and the man smiles at him. “New kid huh?” Jared glances at him and heads through the aisle of seats looking for an empty one. He looks down into the faces of students as they look up at him as he looks for an empty space, when finally a clear seat comes into view, he takes it without paying any attention to the person beside him. He hears snickering from the seat across the row but refuses to look over at them, instead putting his head down pretending to mess with his book bag as he settles it between his knees.

The sound of an asthma inhaler catches Jared’s attention and he cautiously looks over at a very scrawny girl with dark horn rimmed glasses, braces for her large over bite and honest to God pigtails pulled up on either side of her head. He stares at her for a few seconds in almost shock at the irony of the fact this could be any cheesy John Hughes 80’s high school movie he has ever seen. He gives her a half hearted smile, she is showing her huge silver one and her eyes are very excited as she stares at him. He only prays she doesn’t try and attack him as he readjusts before looking away from her.

The bus pulls up in front of the school and they all file off and out into the court yard. Jared pulls his hoodie over his head and breaks out into a run for the doors when he hears a voice calling out. “Hey!”, he turns to look and sees a dark haired boy running towards him, he slows his pace but keeps moving. “Do you want me?” He says back to him. The boy smiles as he comes face to face with Jared. “Let’s not jump the gun here.” He holds out a notebook. “I think this is yours.” He says with a bright smile, “You dropped it trying to get off the bus ahead of Judy.” Jared stare at the young man’s eyes, so deep green and he has freckles, tons of tiny tan freckles all over his face and it’s too adorable. He takes the notebook without looking. “Thanks.” He says biting his lower lip and then extends his hand. “Jared Padalecki.” The young man takes his hand. “Jensen Ackles.” He says smiling. “Thanks again Jensen.” Jared says letting go of his hand. “Not a problem, see ya tomorrow.” He says giving him a salute and running up the front steps and Jared can’t help but stare at him as he disappears into the building.

Tuesday

Jared arrives early to the bus stop; it’s a bright sunny morning and he wants the time alone to read his history assignment that he decided to ditch in place of pizza and Halo with Chad.

The bench is short and hard and he is positive a three foot leprechaun constructed it because his knees are to his chin as he steadies the huge book on them. A few girls sit on the bench next him giggling and distracting him with their nonsensical gossip. He looks at them from under his long bangs before pretending to continue his reading.

More students start arriving and shoving onto the bench next to him crowding him to the very edge against the thick glass wall.

He feels a tapping on the glass next to his head. He looks over seeing Jensen smiling at him through the window while waving for him to come outside the shelter. He smiles and packs his book away un-wedging himself from the close quarters.

Standing in the sun light Jensen’s freckles are more pronounced and his eyes an even deeper green then yesterday. Jared wants to run his thumb over the freckles marking Jensen’s cheekbone but he restrains himself and only claps him on the shoulder.

“Getting pretty tight in there?” Jensen asks popping a piece of gum into his mouth and offering a piece to Jared who takes one.

“Yeah, I swear a midget designed those shelters.” He laughs putting the gum in his mouth.

Jensen smiles at him as he looks up at him from under his brow. “I stay out of them as much as possible. So how come I didn’t see you on the bus ride home yesterday?” He asks as he squints one eye from the sun shining behind Jared’s head as he looks directly into his hazel eyes.

“Oh my Mom picks me up because I stay late with you know clubs and stuff.” Jared snaps the gum between his back teeth.

“So, are you new to the neighborhood or what?” Jensen says as he stuffs his hands into his front pockets.

“No, just new to the school bus route, I came home past my curfew a few times and lost my car privileges.” Jared says ducking his head in shame.

“That sucks, but maybe it’s a good thing.” Jensen says smirking at him his mouth turned up into a seductive tease. His green eyes twinkling with the sunlight, the light blonde highlights of his hair glistening through the soft spikes and his long lush lashes dance with the light golden rays as he shifts his eyes to the side as if being coy with Jared.

Jared swallows hard at Jensen’s flirting. He’s never been flirted with, usually he does all of the flirting but he likes this and he bites his lip with nervousness. “Yeah, I’m beginning to get that.” He says shifting his stance making his shoulders broader showing his full height. He runs his fingers through his bangs shoving them off of his face so Jensen can see him unobstructed and flashes the biggest smile he can manage without looking ridiculous. “So, you live close?’ He asks giving a bit of a supermodel stance before leaning on the side of the bus shelter with his shoulder.

The long lean line of Jared’s neck catches Jensen’s eye, he stares at it following it to the opening below his collar to the hollow of his throat and licks his lips wondering what sucking it might taste like before he regains his composure. “Not far.” He answers with a suave nonchalant tone. “How bout you?” His eyes wander Jared’s body taking notice of his long lean frame, the way his polo shirt fits his chest as it pulls across the expanse of his shoulders and he can’t help but feel a bit weak in the knees.

“Just up the street.” Jared points in the direction of his house. “Sixth house on the right side, white with green shutters.”

“I’m the other direction about three blocks.” Jensen points down the street. “I don’t have a car; well don’t have my license yet either.” His voice drops. “My dad’s in Iraq and my Mom doesn’t drive, but when he gets home, he’s going to teach me.”

“Cool.” Jared says feeling a bit awkward. “My brother taught me to drive.” He laughs. “Not the best teacher but we got through it and I passed my test and then got the hand me down family car, but hey, it works.” Jared laughs turning to lean his back on the shelter his hands shoved into his front jean pockets.

“Hand me down is better than having to borrow the family ride all of the time.” The sight of Jared’s hands shoved into his pockets makes Jensen’s heart race, he wants to slip his in next to Jared’s long thin fingers and intertwine them together.

The sound of the school bus’ engine was roaring down the street as Jared replies. “That’s for sure.” He looks over his shoulder and sighs. “Speaking of rides.” He pulls his book bag over his shoulder. “Want to sit together?” He says seeing his bus buddy staring at him from inside the window.

“No empty seats dude and I sit with my baseball buddy.” Jensen says smiling as he passes Jared by to get on the bus ahead of him. “See you later.” He gives him a quick salute as he passes by.

Jared takes a deep breath as he gets on the bus then walks back to the only empty seat. She is waiting with a huge enthused toothy grin that is almost scary. “Hi Jared.” She gushes with a deep breath. He rolls his eyes as he sits down and then searches the bus for Jensen who is looking back at him with a big smile on his face. Jensen winks at him when he catches Jared looking at him with a pitiful help me plea before turning back around to talk to the guy beside him.

Wednesday

Armed with a new shirt, cologne and strawberry flavored Chap Stick Jared arrives at the bus stop. He can’t stop messing with his hair as he looks at his reflection in the glass. He’s more nervous today than the first day he arrived at the stop and Jensen has everything to do with it.

Students start gathering around him and he watches the street Jensen had shown him that he lived up; just waiting to see him swaggering that sexy walk towards him with his ear buds pushed tightly into his ears as he sings along with whatever he likes to listen too on his iPod.

He watches expectantly for what feels like hours as the bus stop fills up with kids. He looks at his watch and it’s almost time for the bus but no Jensen.

The bus pulls up and everyone piles on, Jared sits down in his seat and tries his best to avoid his bench mate as he strains his neck to look out the windows on the other side as the bus pulls away, just hoping that Jensen will be running down the street waving for the bus to stop but as the bus passes the intersection there is still no Jensen. Jared flops back in his seat a frown on his face and for the first time in his teenage life he feels alone.

Thursday

Jared makes a slow crawl of the short half block walk to the bus stop this morning. He meanders at a snails pace watching the corner for any sign of Jensen but it’s still empty and he doesn’t want to cross the street until he knows he will be there today.
He stands on the curb of the corner just watching as best he can up the street beyond the shelter, beyond the stop sign, up the street squinting as he tries to see up the three blocks Jensen had said he lived on.

Finally he crosses the street warily stepping foot on the curb never taking his eyes off of the other street when a hand touches his shoulder. He turns around quickly to be face to face with Jensen. He can’t help but have a huge smile on his face and he reaches out and claps him on the back then pulls him in for a hug. Jensen is surprised at the grasp but goes with it letting himself fall into Jared and pulling him close taking in his scent before they separated, hands still lingering on Jensen’s shoulders.

“Dude, where were you yesterday?” Jared says with exasperation.

“I had a doctors appointment. I went in late, sorry I didn’t tell you but really didn’t know it mattered.” He says smiling looking innocently into Jared’s wide hazel eyes.

“Of course it matters, I thought something happened.” He lets go of Jensen’s shoulders and shoves his hands into his pockets. “I.” He hesitates before he finishes. “missed you.”

Jensen smiles, his cheeks flush and he wants to pull Jared into another hug this time ending in a deep meaningful kiss but all he can do is chuckle. “Good to know you care.”

“Of course I care, I like you.” Jared blurts out and then catches what he said a blush rushing into his cheeks and he looks down bashfully.

Smiling brightly with a twinkle in his eye and not noticing all of the kids now surrounding them Jensen lifts up on his tip toes and meets Jared’s mouth planting a soft tender kiss on it before whispering. “I like you too Jared.” Jared’s reaction is more than surprise as he stares at him stunned. “You just kissed me.” He states licking his lips to savor the taste of Jensen. Jensen smiles lowering his body back down again. “And, is that a problem?” He quirks his eyebrow and smiles back at Jared. Jared is flushed red and starting to sweat, something he only does when he’s extremely nervous. “Not a problem at all.” He says regaining his composure as he looks around noticing the other students watching them. “I think we have an audience.” He says nervously. “Then let them watch this.” Jensen says reaching up and pulling Jared’s face down to his before giving his mouth another kiss, this time with passion behind it, pushing his tongue between Jared’s lips savoring his taste as he swipes across his lower lip before breaking the kiss.

Breathless and more than a little excited Jared runs his hand down Jensen’s cheek across his jaw line. “Very nice.” Is all he manages as the bus pulls up. He adjusts his book bag over the bulge in his jeans before getting on. Jensen is ahead of him and he bypasses his baseball buddy walking back to Jared’s seat. He leans in over the seat to the girl and says something to her as he points to his seat, her eyes get wide and she quickly gathers her things heading to the seat. Jensen smiles waving his hand at the now empty seat and Jared climbs in with Jensen moving in right beside him sliding in close, pressing his body next to Jared’s.
“What did you say to her?” Jared asks.

“I just explained to her that I wanted to sit with you and she could have my seat up there with Fred.”

Jared looks over at them and Fred is trying very hard to get Jensen’s attention as the bus pulls away from the stop. “Looks like he wants your attention.” Jared laughs.

“Yeah, I’ll deal with that later, right now, all I want to do is focus on us.” He says putting his hand on Jared’s knee refusing to look at his friend.

Friday

Jared’s door bell rings and his mother goes to answer it as he is finishes up the last bites of his toast and bacon. She returns to the kitchen with Jensen following behind her. “I believe this young man is here to see you Jay.” She says before leaving the kitchen.

“Jensen.” He says excitedly. “How did you, I mean what are you doing here?” He jumps off his stool and moves in closer.

“Sixth house on the right, white with green shutters, remember.” He laughs.

“Oh, yeah, right.” Jared says leaning down and kissing Jensen’s mouth tenderly. “I just can’t believe you’re here.” He gushes.

“Thought I’d walk you to the bus stop today.” He smiles and puts his arm out and crooks the elbow. “Ready?”

“Just a second.” Jared grabs his juice and swallows the last of it before throwing his book bag over his shoulder and taking Jensen’s elbow. “I’m not a girl.” He says pushing his arm down and taking his hand in his.

“Oh, well then, this will definitely do.” Jensen chuckles and squeezes Jared’s hand tighter as they walk out of the door.

Saturday and Sunday

The weekend doesn’t seem long enough for either of them.

Jared goes to Jensen’s Saturday morning baseball practice. He cheers appropriately and whistles at Jensen’s cute behind when he rounds home plate during the scrimmage pick up game with a rival team.

Jensen goes to Jared’s Drama club play practice on Saturday night being the one man audience for the troop as they perform You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.

After play practice they walk down to the burger shack and have burgers and malts as they wait for Jared’s brother Jeff to pick them up. They talk about everything they like and dislike, how they never met before this week when actually they only live a few blocks away and how glad they were that they did meet.

Sunday morning Jared’s parents pick Jensen up and they go out for breakfast after church so they can all get to know him. Megan gets an instant crush on Jensen but Jared claims him by holding his hand under the table and they smile at each other wishing they could kiss openly.

In the afternoon they lay across Jensen’s bed with his laptop and look things up while they do their homework. Their legs intertwined as they play footsie through their white cotton socks.

Jared stays for dinner and afterwards Jensen walks him back home. They walk the four blocks very slowly their fingers entangled as they hold hands, when they get to the bus stop Jensen stops. “I think this is where I met this cute guy once.” He says pulling Jared inside of the shelter to sit on the bench. “Oh yeah I kind of remember some really handsome guy that caught my eye too.” He laughs pushing in tight to Jensen’s hip as he rests their hands on his thigh.

“I think I wanted to kiss him.” Jensen says pushing his shoulder into Jared’s.

“How would you have done it, if you had of course?” Jared says turning his head to angle with Jensen’s, his lips expectant and willing.

“Well I might have done it something like this.” He leans up pushing into Jared’s mouth with his as he runs his hand through the back of Jared’s hair pulling him in tighter for a deep lingering kiss.

They pull apart eyes still closed and Jensen slowly opens his only to gaze into Jared’s love struck hazel pools dancing in the low street lamp light showing in through the glass walls. They smile at each other not saying another word and then press their foreheads together lovingly.

Monday

Arriving earlier than usual Jensen waits for Jared at the bus stop. He watches down the street and contemplates picking him up again but then just resigns to waiting patiently for him.

He sees a dark blue car rolling out of what looks like Jared’s driveway and he watches it as it rolls up the street to the stop sign and then stops in front of the bus stop. The passenger side window comes down and Jared leans over the seat pushing his aviator sunglasses down on his nose then peering over golden frames he smiles a big toothy grin. “I hear some hot guy needs a ride to school today.” He says smoothly.

Jensen laughs leaning in the window. “Well I’m hot, I’m a guy and I need a ride. Will I do?” He says putting his hand on the door latch.

“MMMM.” Jared says looking him up and down before pushing his glasses back up on his face. “More than do. Hop in stud.” He laughs as Jensen slides in next to him the only thing keeping him from pressing up against Jared is the gear shift but he leans over it and gives him a quick peck before shutting his door.

“It’s so nice to have a boyfriend with a car.” Jensen says winking at Jared as they drive off.
